The pre-reading, pre-writing and pre-math skills are done entirely through Irish in the Junior and Senior Infant class. There is a lot of crossover from language to language here and the goals of both languages (English and Irish) are achieved at this level as set out by the revised new language primary school curriculum. According to the international research it is recommended to start reading in L1 of the school. That is how it is done in Gaelscoil na Mara. The introduction of English begins at the beginning of 1st Class, pre-reading skills in English are reinforced at this time, pronunciation, pre-writing and oral work are done with 1st Class. From 1st to 6th Class, the children’s work is built on in Irish and English. There is a certain period in 1st and 2nd Class when the class’s ability profile is behind the expected profile but this self corrects in 3rd and 4th class. This happens with spelling more than with reading and parents are made aware of this, regarding ways in which they can help their children if the school deems it necessary.
