An Tumoideachas i nGaelscoil Bhunscoile

I nGaelscoil, is é an tumoideachas iomlán croílár na foghlama. Ciallaíonn sé seo go mbíonn an Ghaeilge mar phríomhtheanga an teagaisc, an chumarsáide agus an tsaoil scoile ó thús deireadh an lae.

Inár scoil féin, ní mhúintear Béarla go foirmiúil go dtí Rang a hAon. Tugann sé seo deis do pháistí bunús láidir, nádúrtha a fhorbairt sa Ghaeilge ar dtús.

Conas a oibríonn an tumoideachas?

  • Gaeilge mar theanga an lae: Úsáidtear an Ghaeilge i ngach ábhar – Mata, OSIE, Ealaín, Corpoideachas agus ceol.

  • Foghlaim trí chluiche agus trí ghníomh: Go háirithe sna ranganna sóisearacha, foghlaimíonn páistí trí amhráin, cluichí, scéalta agus rólghlacadh.

  • Tacaíocht amhairc agus comhthéacs: Úsáidtear pictiúir, gothaí, rudaí fisiciúla agus athrá chun tuiscint a chothú gan gá le haistriúchán.

  • Cur chuige dearfach, nádúrtha: Ní chuirtear brú ar pháistí labhairt láithreach – tagann an teanga de réir a chéile le himeacht ama.

  • Béarla ó Rang a hAon: Nuair a thosaíonn teagasc foirmiúil Béarla, bíonn scileanna teanga láidre forbartha cheana féin, rud a thacaíonn leis an dátheangachas.

Cruthaíonn an cur chuige seo páistí muiníneacha, solúbtha a bhfuil buntáiste teanga agus cognaíoch acu don saol.

Total Immersion in a Gaelscoil Primary School

In a Gaelscoil, total immersion is at the heart of how children learn. This means that Irish is the main language of teaching, communication and daily school life from the very beginning.

In our school, English is not taught formally until First Class. This allows children to build a strong, natural foundation in Irish before introducing a second language in a structured way.

How does total immersion work?

  • Irish as the language of the day: All subjects – Maths, SESE, Art, PE and Music – are taught through Irish.

  • Learning through play and activity: Especially in the early years, children learn through songs, games, stories and hands-on experiences.

  • Visual and contextual support: Teachers use pictures, gestures, real objects and repetition to support understanding without translation.

  • A gentle, positive approach: Children are never forced to speak before they are ready – language develops naturally over time.

  • English introduced in First Class: By this stage, children have strong language-learning skills, which supports successful bilingualism.

This approach helps children become confident, adaptable learners with long-term linguistic and cognitive benefits.
